2010 - Out Of Africa Dance Academy put a smile on the children of Maitland Cottage Homes faces this Xmas.

Kiala Kapela (SANTA), one of the dancers and Shaker Jason Meyer entertained the children with their amazing dance moves.
Xmas packs with chocs, chips, juice and xmas crackers were handed to the kids followed by a meal and rolls.
What an amazing and awesome experience this was.

The organisation has been involved in the December 2005 Christmas Box Community Project in partnership with the Department of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation. Youth involvement in crime continues to be a challenge in the Western Cape. On average there are 2 223 youth arrests per month. The plight of the youth is exacerbated by substance abuse, poverty, joblessness, unhealthy lifestyles, crime, a low sense of self-worth and a lack of recreational activities. The youth constitutes 46% of the unemployed in the Province; while only three out of every Black job applicants are successful in finding employment. There is a 48% dropout rate in Grades 10-12, while those who have matriculated are exposed to the harsh reality of limited job opportunities.
Within this context, Out of Africa Dance Academy has been established to create a platform for job creation whereby disadvantaged youth can further their dancing careers and create opportunities for them to become teachers. This would allow them to go back into their communities and teach others what they have learnt, thus creating a ripple effect. By doing so, the organisation would thus be encouraging the building of social capital through strengthening and building community networks. Of importance is the provision of programmes for youth that will motivate them to participate and derive a sense of value. It also provides them with a skill and an opportunity of a career, as well as instilling a sense of self-worth and purpose.
The Out of Africa Dance Academy is seeking to create a platform
for disadvantaged dancers to further their dancing careers and create opportunities
for them to become teachers. A follow up workshop was conducted in March 2006
at Parkwood Primary School as a follow up after the Christmas Box Deliverables.
13 Possible youth have been selected to further their dancing career with
the Academy.
