About Us

The Project Coordinator and founder member, Ivy Meyer (who is from the previously disadvantaged community of Bonteheuwel), trained at the Bonteheuwel community centre on the Cape Flats, which was a government project 40 years ago. Ivy Meyer had an opportunity to be trained by professional and qualified teachers in Ballet, who developed them as dancers to be individuals, and building into them a sense of self-worth, confidence, pride and purpose.

Ivy Meyer completed her South African Dance Teachers Associate in Modern Jazz and Hip-Hop dance through the South African Dance Teachers Association. Having this formal accreditation puts her in a good position to be able to give the youth a foundation to further their careers by enrolling them for exams, Eisteddfods and competitions.

She has been teaching in the communities of Strandfontein, Mitchells Plain, Retreat and Hout Bay for the past twenty years before starting the organisation in August 2005. The organisation Out of Africa Dance Academy with the motto "Dreams into Reality" is made up of a group of dynamic young dancers both male and female, 95% of who come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and from various communities across the Cape Peninsula.

The organisation has been involved in the December 2005 Christmas Box Community Project in partnership with the Department of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation. The following areas were involved: Masephumilele Site 5; Westlake; Du Noon; Samora Machel-Khayelitsha; Delft/Uitsig; Shawco-Kensington; Manenberg; Parkwood.
