Learners Inspired by Art Fusion Production :: 27 February 2013

On Valentine’s Day 2013 the St. Augustine Primary School’s hall was filled with children anxiously awaiting the start of the Arts Fusion production. Dressed in red and pink, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, the children were entertained with dancing, music, poetry and singing.

The cast members, unemployed Western Cape youth, from Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Stellenbosch, Saldanha and Ocean View, danced and sang with passion, thoroughly entertaining the Primary School learners.

The Art Fusion Programme took place from 11 – 14 February at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s Cultural Facility, Melkbos Oppie See. During the first three days the facilitators presented workshops, formulating ideas on how to combine the respective art forms to represent the theme of “Living Heritage.”

Pianist and composer, Camillo Lombard, facilitated the musicians, Creative Director Primrose Mrwebi the poetry and Jason Meyer, from Out of Africa Dance academy, facilitated the dancing. The three facilitators provided the group with the opportunity to explore their artistic talents. Their production inspired the young learners and exemplified the unlimited possibilities of art.

The final production was staged at St. Augustine Primary School. The learners were filled with excitement and thoroughly enjoyed the production. The cast members were overwhelmed by the thunderous applause at the end of the production.

Benjamin Bock, Cultural Practitioner in Vredendal, informed the learners that they too can reach such heights through pursuing their dreams and working hard.

The Art Fusion production will be showcased at the ArtsCape Theatre as part ofthe Youth Day celebrations on 16 June 2013.

The cast members demonstrated through this production that the fusion of arts leads to a multi-dimensional display that captivates and inspires young and old.
